The Green Cat
When I'm not on the hunt for comfort food or the next best dessert, I try to live a balanced lifestyle which includes generally eating healthy and making it to the gym a few times a week. Though I hate to admit it, my post workout routine looks like less of a protein shake and more of me raiding the pantry like a ravenous wolf for the nearest open bag of salt and vinegar chips. Instead, I dodged my house and headed straight to local, family-owned The Green Cat for one of their soft openings.
From the fruit waiting to be juiced to the hand-chalked wall, The Green Cat is as bright and cheery as their menu. Their menu includes an assortment of smoothies, smoothie bowls, salads, cold-pressed juices, oatmeal, coffee from local roaster Jolly Roasters (read more here) and exotic iced teas like cherry rose green tea and blueberry hibiscus. Their market side has everything from kale chips to t-shirts to artisan jewelry and candles.
After much pondering I ordered the Vegging Out salad ($12) with fluffy fresh kale, quinoa, avocado, lemon, red onions, and carrot all doused in a creamy hemp seed dressing. A classic and simple kale salad, the toasty hemp seed dressing and creamy avocado added that extra pizzazz that my own homemade salads had been missing.
Now if I was going to trek the green route with a salad, I had to go a little more decadent with the Traveling Yogi smoothie ($9). More like a healthier milkshake, this smoothie was blended with banana, almond milk, cacao, almond butter, maple syrup and cinnamon for that pinch of spice.
Incredibly rich and filling, I could've had this one on its own and called it a day. However, I couldn’t resist taking one of their cold-pressed juices home. Their Spicy Gypsy ($6) packs a hefty punch making this one a sure sipper.
As I lounged on their terrace surrounded by hanging plants and glowing yellow chairs, I dreamt of the next item I'll be ordering on my second visit, their Youth Potion smoothie made with dragonfruit sounds about right.
The Green Cat is located at 3801 Pacific Avenue in Virginia Beach. They are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday–Saturday and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.
