The Best Thing I Ate This Week: Gershwins' Mousse
Once I stepped through Gershwin’s doors, I was immediately transported back to the swingin’ ‘40s, surrounded by a whirlpool of black and gold and one swanky bar. My husband and I were seated upstairs right above the stage where a gal’s velvety voice travelled throughout the restaurant.
It’s Downtown Norfolk Restaurant Week, which means participating restaurants offer delicious prix fixe lunch and dinner menus at wallet-friendly prices. After some contemplating over the impressive Norfolk restaurants offering specials this week, we picked Gershwin’s on Granby Street.
An order of their tableside smoked whiskeys kicked off the evening, but I won’t spill the beans here (there’s more to come on this in our April issue). I chose from the $25 menu and ordered their chunky pimento cheese and eggplant parmesan over penne. Cody ordered from their $35 menu with mussels nestled in an herbaceous broth to start then a seafood platter over risotto for his entree. Though we were quite satiated, we looked ahead to course three: the Dessert of the Day.
This whipped chocolate perfection was the sweetest possible ending to my cheese-heavy meal. The fluffy chocolate mousse was whipped with Frangelico giving it an even richer consistency than I expected. Reminiscent of silky milk chocolate, the mousse was also delightfully nutty and topped with semisweet chocolate shavings. Whenever the mousse became too cloying, the raspberry sauce along the outskirts provided a tart escape that was seedy and purely delicious on its own.
With the final bite of mousse, we surrendered our spoons, just in time for a light dusting of snow to scatter across Norfolk.
