Wasserhund Brewing Company
There's a new brewery at the beach!
The craft beer scene has been a-boomin’ the last few years, and myself and all the other beer lovers out there are mighty pleased.
After years of homebrewing and a trip to Germany, Wasserhund Brewing Company was birthed. Wasserhund translates to “water dog” in German—the perfect name to sum up owners Aaron and Christine Holley’s love for the beach, German beer and dogs. Located off of Laskin Road next to Conte's Bike Shop, its vibe embraces the beach theme with lots of light, wood and blue tones. Even surfboard light fixtures dangle above the tables.
The husband ordered the Schwarz IPA, a malty play on a traditional IPA, while I opted for the flight. Our server explained that their busy opening weekend left them with tasting glasses that didn’t quite fit in the paddle, but that was a-okay with me. I chose their Hefeweizen, Dunkel Lager, Hoppin’ Honey Ale and their Altbier. My favorite was the Hefeweizen—bright, wheat-y, fresh and crisp, this one went down smooth.
But what sets Wasserhund apart from other local breweries isn’t just their German-style beer; it’s that they make their own pub food. Now, don’t get me wrong; I love a good food truck (see here, here and here), but there's a certain level of comfort that's met when you can just take a seat and have your food delivered. The Guinness and Sriracha bratwursts were enticing, and their lovely pretzels were as big as a dinner plate. But without much debate, our hearts were set on the brick-oven pizza. We ordered The Hellhound, which our waitress kindly added that it pairs well with their Pilsner and Hefeweizen. Good thing I was halfway there. The Hellhound was the spiciest pizza offering with sriracha sausage, red onions, banana peppers, jalapeños and Texas Pete Hot Sauce. She was right; the hefe sure assisted in taming the heat.
I’m anticipating their Bacon Stout, which they said they’ll release once they reach 2,000 likes on Facebook. So, please, do this gal a favor!
